The Lantern Festival falls on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, usually in February or March in the Gregorian calendar. As early as the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 25), it had become a festival with great significance.

This day's important activity is watching lanterns. Throughout the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), Buddhism flourished in China. One emperor heard that Buddhist monks would watch sarira, or remains from the cremation of Buddha's body, and light lanterns to worship Buddha on the 15th day of the 1st lunar month, so he ordered to light lanterns in the imperial palace and temples to show respect to Buddha on this day. Later, the Buddhist rite developed into a grand festival among common people and its influence expanded from the Central Plains to the whole of China.

private cars have become an important aspect of people’s life in many parts of our country, especially in large cities such as beijing, shanghai and guangzhou. while they bring much convenience to people, they are also widely criticized.

there are some arguments for owning private cars. in the first place, cars allow people to move around freely, which greatly improves our living standard. we can easily drive cars for sightseeing on weekends. in the second place, cars are a comfortable way to travel, especially in bad weather. last but not least, the car industry can boost economy by creating many job opportunities in production of steel, rubber, glass and so on.

however, there are also many good arguments against cars. first of all, they pollute the environment by emitting harmful gases and giving out loud noises. in addition, cars cause a large number of traffic accidents, which bring great misery to the victims’ families.

as far as i am concerned, we should limit the number of private cars by providing better mass transportation and better service for the people. everyone should sacrifice his or her own interest for the common good of the society.

While there are many versions of the origins and old customs of Halloween, some remain consistentby all accounts. Different cultures view Halloween somewhat differently but traditional Halloween practices remain the same.

Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feastof Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead.

Samhain signifies "summers end" or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.

The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacifythe evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating.

There are so many people smoke in the world, though they know smoking is harmful to their health, they just could not get rid of it. The number of smoker increases very year, the worse thing is that some smokers don’t realize they had bad effect on others. For the health, we should stay away from smoking.

Once people smoke, it is hard for them to get rid of it. Take my father for example. My father started to smoke when he had the job annoyance at the age of 30. Since then, he smoked now and then, the tried to quit many times, but he never made it, because his mind told him smoke all the time. My father is a typical smoker, many smokers like him have given up quitting smoke.

Smoking not only hurts one’s health, but also brings bad effect on others. The second-hand cigarette is harmful to the people who are around the smokers. The innocent people should not have to suffer from it. For everybody’s health, it is our duty to keep away from smoking.

Having been in Massey high School for more than one month, I still remember the first day I came here。 My eyes were lit up by seeing such three large magnificent football fields。 No doubt, for the soccer lover like my friends and me, nothing is better than the natural green—grass where we can run without any worries。

Two weeks later, our English teacher Mr。 Brodie found us, “Do you guys like soccer? Here is a social team of Massey High lacking members, do you want to join?” “Of course!” Answered by us without hesitation。 At weekend, with an excited heart, I arrived at the field to meet my new team partners。 Even before I stood up after changing into my soccer shoes, they came to me, shaking hands with me one by one and introduced themselves。 Some of them are kiwi; some are international students like me but came from South America (Guys from there always have amazing soccer skills just like people from China can use chopsticks well。。 During the game, I fought the best, creating the opportunities for partners。 Our efforts got the reward, because we became the winner at last and I won the cheer from my partners。 Although my friends and I performed well at the soccer game, we found the lack of strength compared with the kiwis。 So now, hard soccer training and push—up have become an indispensable part of our life。

Many Thanks to the soccer for not only the benefits it brings to my physical health, but also the friendship and happiness。
