The study shows that in recent 300 years, the forest area in current territory of China has declined by 0.95×108 hm2 (or 9.2% of the coverage rate) in total, with a trend of decrease and recovery. Before the 1960s, there was a trend of accelerated de- scending. The forest area was reduced by 1.66×108 hm2 (or 17% of the coverage rate) in 260 years. While after the 1960s, there has been a rapid increase. The forest area increased by 0.7×108 hm2 (or 8% of the coverage rate) in 40 years. The study also shows that there is a significant spatial difference in the dynamics of forest. The amplitudes of increasing and de- creasing in western China are both smaller than the ones in eastern China. During the rapid declining period from 1700 to 1949, the most serious decrease appeared in the Northeast, the Southwest and the Southeast, where the coverage rate in most provinces dropped over 20%.
In Heilongjiang Province, the coverage rate dropped by 50%. In Jilin Province, it dropped by 36%. In Sichuan Province and Chongqing Municipality, it dropped by 42%. In Yunnan Prov- ince, it dropped by 35%. "We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas…"Have you heard that song? Yup! Its Christmas time! This Christmas, I stayed with my "host family"1. It was an amazing experience to see how a typical American family would celebrate the biggest western festival of the year.
Christmas, like our Spring Festival, has a meaning in itself. Christmas Day, which is on December 25, is the birthday of Jesus Christ--the son of God. Thats why it is called Christmas. On that day, Christians would get together with their families to celebrate the birthday of Jesus. But nowadays, the religious meaning of Christmas has become less emphasized. To many families, it is just a time of family reunion and the ever-exciting present-giving.
Our school had been on winter vacation since December 11. I stayed at my friend, Stephen Stapczynskis house--his family was my "host family". Although Christmas was still more than ten days ahead, the festive spirit had already been teeming everywhere. The Christmas tree had already been set up, and on every windowsill, there were Christmas lights. On the first day I arrived at their house, Stephen and I helped Mrs. Stapczynski put decorations on the Christmas tree. The tree looked so nice with all the lights on and the beautiful ornaments dangling from its branches.
As Christmas came closer, the whole neighborhood had made preparations too. Some people would hold parties at their houses, inviting all their neighbors to come. So every night, if you went out, you would see a long line of cars parked in front of some house--a partys on!
Whats more, the Christmas decorations that some people put on their windows and in gardens were just amazing. On one night, we went out in our car for a "tour of lights". There was one street that was so famous for its lights that it got its way into the local paper. We had a hard time finding the well-hidden street, but it turned out to be worth the effort. Lights shone brightly in front of nearly every house, on trees, bushes, doors, windows…everywhere, taking different shapes, making it seem almost like daytime. Huge inflatable figures in the front gardens were waving to us: there were Santa Clauses2, of course, chuckling merrily away; and there were also other Christmas figures, like Rudolph3--the red-nosed reindeer--with his red nose gleaming ever so brightly; even Bart Simpson--a character in the famous comedy The Simpsons--had joined the jolly party, wearing a Santas hat. The street set off a lot of "ooh"s and "aah"s inside the car.4 When we left, there was a line of cars in the street, all there to see the lights.
Christmas is the time for exchanging presents. Stephen and Niko hance formed, is permanent, cannot change. This is worth learning.
American thrift is more worth learning. In China, we may be a little wasteful, but in the United States, most of the meals are buffet. There are some Chinese students who have been watching for a while. Many students take a lot of food, but many of them are wasted, and americans eat as much as they can and never waste food. My MOM is a woman who knows her life well and doesnt live in a wealthy neighborhood, but her family has always been frugal. They have three cars, an armored car, a sports car and a car. Two of them are luxury cars, and one is a Mercedes Benz in the eighties. In China, people tend to drive luxury cars, and they usually drive old cars. They have a pool where they often hold parties, so that we have the privilege of meeting more foreigners.
On the first day to Los Angeles, Xu Mingjie very lucky and I attended a local wedding, it was a very romantic wedding, under the illuminate of lamplight, a couple looks very bright. Little girls and small, well-fitted dresses add another look to the wedding.
Christianity was the bishop of the United States, and in the soslan school, it was the propaganda of Christianity. In that, although we believe in Buddhism, we respect their Christian culture, which is the highlight of Chinese students abroad. Our family still goes to church on the weekend.
In the United States, we went to shopping malls, and the shop assistants were very enthusiastic about us, and we were in that crazy shopping, invisibility, which promoted the economic development of the United States. To think about, and why the salesman students enthusiasm for China, which is not Chinas continuous development, continuous increase in the national economy, despite this, we dont it is for the welfare of the United States?
After a week of study, we went on to the east, the White House, congress, the United Nations, Wall Street, Broadway... Let us experience another American amorous feelings.
I dont think americans are as gentlemanly as British people, but there are still places to learn, and Ive benefited a lot from this trip to America.
