I was born in a small town named Hailin, located in the North-East of China. The most serious problems in my hometown are the backward ideas about a woman's place in the family, school, workplace, and society. These negative stereotypes hurt not only women, but all of society as well. If possible, I would change the attitudes of the people in my hometown so they would view men and women equally. Discrimination against women in my hometown begins before they are even born. Because people here believe that only a man can carry on the family line, every family wants to have at least one son. Each family is only supposed to have one child because of the overpopulation problem. This means that if a family can find out a fetus is female before it is born they might abort it. Or in other cases, people will have many female babies before they have a son, which only makes the population problem worse. If female babies were considered as important as male babies, then these two problems probably would not exist. Discrimination against girls continues as they go to school and work. The prevalent stereotype is that women are not as smart as men and we shouldn't waste time and money educating them. Families often insist that their daughters stay at home and help with housework while sending their sons to school. Girls are born every bit as smart as boys and equally deserve to reap the benefits of education. Many of the world's famous scientists and leaders are women, from Marie Curie to Margaret Thatcher. We need to eliminate the stereotype that women are less intelligent than men so that our community can benefit from the achievements that women are capable of making when armed with education. In fact, women need to be respected enough to hold professional and leadership jobs in our community. This would mean that in the classified section of newspapers, there would no longer be jobs for "men only." We will never know how many women could have done those jobs better than a man could have until the parents of every baby girl decide that their daughter is worth as much as their son. This is probably the most important thing that I want to change about my hometown.

Similarly, I would not have a business without my customers. I can never forget that they could take their business elsewhere. I must give them good value for their money. I can’t overcharge them. I must also remember that money is as important to them as it is to me. I want my customers to trust me and keep coming back.
My employees and I all live in the same community as our customers. We are apart of the social life of our community. We can’t ignore it. We must play an active part in it. I feel it is important that some of the profits my business earns from the community be returned to the community. We need to support community programs like summer jobs for high school students, campaigns to clean up the parks, and efforts to make the shopping area more attractive.
A business must make profits, but we all—workers, customers, community—must profit from a successful business.

I was so angry that my smile froze and disappeared. I paused and stared at the ceiling, wondering whether I should go or stay. Unexpectedly, the noise in the classroom died down. I lowered my head and looked straight. To my great surprise, nearly all the students sat still on their chairs, looking at me attentively. I was a little puzzled. Why did they behave themselves so soon? Were they frightened? I could not wait to make it clear. Anyway, they were quiet. I would take the chance to make myself known to them.
“Hello, I am your new English teacher. My name is Lawrence. Nice to meet you.” I paused, waiting for their response. No reply. Didn’t they understand me? From the harbor you can get a feel for the attractive “city of green spires.” At twilight or in cloudy weather, the copper-covered spires of old castles and churches lend the city a dream-like atmosphere. You’ll think you’ve stepped into a watercolor painting.
Copenhagen is a city on a human scale. You don’t have to hurry to walk the city’ s center in less than an hour. Exploring it will take much longer. But that’s easy. Copenhagen was the first city to declare a street for pedestrians only. The city has less traffic noise and pollution than any other European capital.
Stroll away from the harbor along the riverbanks, you’ll see the modest Amalienburg Palace first. Completed in the mid-18th century, it still houses the royal family. The Danish Royal Guard is on duty. At noon, you’ll watch the changing of the guard. The guards are not just for show, however. Danes will always remember their heroism on April 9, 1940. When the Nazis invaded Denmark, the guards aimed their guns and fired. Soldiers fell on both sides. The guards would all have been killed if the king hadn’t ordered them to surrender.
Churches and castles are almost all that remain of the original city. Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark in 1445. During the late 16th century, trade grew, and so did the city. But fires in 1728 and 1795 destroyed the old wooden structures. Much of what we see today dates from the 19th and early 20th centuries②.
See one of the spires up close — really close — at the 17th century Church of Our Savior. Brave souls may climb the 150 stairs winding outside the spire to its top. If you’re afraid of heights, or if it’s a windy day, you can forget the climb. But then you’ll miss the magnificent view.
